Kaiser Wilhelm, Queen Maud, Princess Victoria, King Oscar, Karen Blixen, Knut Hamsun, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edvard Grieg, Henrik Ibsen, William Cecil Slingsby, Roald Amundsen, Kristofer Randers… all fell in love with our country right here, within these walls. At the same time, the memories of mountain adventures melt into the adrenaline pool of mountain adventures possible. Ask for our Climber’s Book, you will find entries from many world-famous mountaineers; read about their adventures, and then go outside and have your own. The restaurants

Our history blends with the history of the world, and its walls have seen a unique, and uniquely long, list of discerning guests. A highlight of their journey was to savor the taste of the fjords in enchanting surroundings, which for many still is a reason to have Union Øye as their destination. Please be seated for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and for the sunny days in our garden by your choice.

The place

The combination of exquisite comfort and exclusive location attracted people like Charles Watson Patchell and William Cecil Slingsby, who made the Alps of Sunnmøre their summer climbing playgrounds - the word of the homeliness, comfort and adventure to be had in Øye carried across Europe, and the hotel became the chosen destination of notables and nobility. 

The fjords were then, like now, attractive waterways for the yachts of the vacationing wealthy. Once moored in Øye, a quick walk would open the doors to a new world - there were few houses, small farms, healthy and rugged people, curious and welcoming of these tourists that came for what Norway offers with ease: unspoiled nature, unique culture, ever-changing weather, and local culinary traditions.
